Synthesis of Spirocyclic β‐ and γ‐Sultams by One‐Pot Reductive Cyclization of Cyanoalkylsulfonyl Fluorides

Published: 20 May 2020

Author(s): Kateryna O. Stepannikova, Bohdan V. Vashchenko, Oleksandr O. Grygorenko, Marian V. Gorichko, Artem Yu. Cherepakha, Yurii S. Moroz, Yulian M. Volovenko, Serhii Zhersh

One‐pot intramolecular cyclization of novel sp3‐enriched cyanoalkylsulfonyl fluorides into spirocyclic β‐ or γ‐sultams is disclosed. The method relies on nitrile group reduction followed by sulfonylation of amino group thus formed upon mild conditions (NaBH4, NiCl2·6H2O in MeOH). Cyclization proceeds smoothly with considerable efficiency (48–84 %, 10 examples) on up to 30 g scale. The cyanoalkylsulfonyl fluoride intermediates can be obtained via S‐nucleophilic substitution in β‐functionalized...

La3B6O13(OH): The First Acentric High‐Pressure Borate Displaying Edge‐Sharing BO4 Tetrahedra

Published: 20 May 2020

Author(s): Birgit Fuchs, Gunter Heymann, Xuefei Wang, Abudukadi Tudi, Lkhamsuren Bayarjargal, Renée Siegel, Adrian Schmutzler, Jürgen Senker, Bastian Joachim‐Mrosko, Andreas Saxer, Zhihua Yang, Shilie Pan, Hubert Huppertz

Abstract La3B6O13(OH) was obtained by a high‐pressure/high‐temperature experiment at 6 GPa and 1673 K. The compound crystallizes in the space group P21 (no. 4) with the lattice parameters a=4.785(2), b=12.880(4), c=7.433(3) Å, and β=90.36(10)°, and is built up of corner‐ as well as edge‐sharing BO4 tetrahedra. It represents the first acentric high‐pressure borate containing these B2O6 entities. The compound develops borate layers of „sechser“‐rings with the La3+ cations positioned between the...

Synthetic Studies towards CH‐Diazomethane Sulfonamides: a Novel Type of Diazo Reagents

Published: 20 May 2020

Author(s): Andrey Bubyrev, Dmitry Dar'in, Grigory Kantin, Mikhail Krasavin

Preparation of CH‐diazomethane sulfonamides has been developed for the first time. Their utility as a new type of diazo reagents was showcased in cycloaddition reactions with electron‐deficient alkynes and β‐nitro styrenes which delivered medicinally important pyrazole‐3‐sulfonamides in good to excellent yields.

Submillisecond Freezing Permits Cryoprotectant‐Free EPR Double Electron−Electron Resonance Spectroscopy

Published: 20 May 2020

Author(s): Thomas Schmidt, Jaekyun Jeon, Yusuke Okuno, Sai C. Chiliveri, G. Marius Clore

Abstract Double electron‐electron resonance (DEER) EPR spectroscopy is a powerful method for obtaining distance distributions between pairs of engineered nitroxide spin‐labels in proteins and other biological macromolecules. These measurements require the use of cryogenic temperatures (77 K or less) to prolong the phase memory relaxation time (Tm) sufficiently to enable detection of a DEER echo curve. Generally, a cryoprotectant such as glycerol is added to protein samples to facilitate glass...

Assessing the Viability of the Methylsulfinyl Radical‐Ozone Reaction

Published: 20 May 2020

Author(s): Marissa L. Estep, Kevin B. Moore, H. F. Schaefer

Abstract Although integral to remote marine atmospheric sulfur chemistry, the reaction between methylsulfinyl radical (CH3SO) and ozone poses challenges to theoretical treatments. The lone theoretical study on this reaction reported an unphysically large barrier of 66 kcal mol−1 for abstraction of an oxygen atom from O3 by CH3SO. Herein, we demonstrate that this result stems from improper use of MP2 with a single‐reference, unrestricted Hartree‐Fock (UHF) wavefunction. We characterized the...

Furfuryl Cation Induced Three‐Component Reaction to Synthesize Triazole‐Substituted Thioesters

Published: 20 May 2020

Author(s): Ying Zhong, Xiaoming Xu, Qingzhao Xing, Song Yang, Jing Gou, Ziwei Gao, Binxun Yu

A furfuryl cation induced three‐component thioesterification reaction between thiols, 5‐bromo‐2‐furylcarbinols and azides is reported. This metal‐free method relies on the acetyl chloride/HFIP‐mediated cascade formal [3+2] cycloaddition/ring‐opening/thioesterification, which allows the efficient construction of a series of complex triazole‐thioesters linked with an (Z)‐olefin. Selenols are also suitable for this strategy. Further derivatization of thioesters highlighted the potential utility...

Spin Crossover and Long‐Lived Excited States in a Reduced Molecular Ruby

Published: 20 May 2020

Author(s): Patrick M. Becker, Christoph Förster, Luca M. Carrella, Pit Boden, David Hunger, Joris Slageren, Markus Gerhards, Eva Rentschler, Katja Heinze

Abstract The chromium(III) complex [CrIII(ddpd)2]3+ (molecular ruby; ddpd=N,N′‐dimethyl‐N,N′‐dipyridine‐2‐yl‐pyridine‐2,6‐diamine) is reduced to the genuine chromium(II) complex [CrII(ddpd)2]2+ with d4 electron configuration. This reduced molecular ruby represents one of the very few chromium(II) complexes showing spin crossover (SCO). The reversible SCO is gradual with T1/2 around room temperature. The low‐spin and high‐spin chromium(II) isomers exhibit distinct spectroscopic and structural...

Highly Polarized Coumarin Derivatives Revisited: Solvent‐Controlled Competition Between Proton‐Coupled Electron Transfer and Twisted Intramolecular Charge Transfer

Published: 20 May 2020

Author(s): Olaf W. Morawski, Łukasz Kielesiński, Daniel T. Gryko, Andrzej L. Sobolewski

Abstract Linking a polarized coumarin unit with an aromatic substituent via an amide bridge results in weak electronic coupling that affects the intramolecular electron‐transfer (ET) process. As a result of this, interesting solvent‐dependent photophysical properties can be observed. In polar solvents, electron transfer in coumarin derivatives of this type induces a mutual twist of the electron‐donating and ‐accepting molecular units (TICT process) that facilitates radiationless decay...
