Experimental and Computational Study on the Anti‐Markovnikov Hydrofunctionalization of Olefins Using Glycine‐Extended AQ‐Auxiliaries

Published: 21 January 2021

Author(s): Fred U. Nnamdi, Colin Diner, Pier Alexandre Champagne, Michael G. Organ

Abstract Two similar tridentate directing groups derived from glycine and 8‐aminoquinoline were shown to enable the palladium‐catalyzed anti‐Markovnikov hydrofunctionalization of 4‐pentenylamine with drastically different efficiencies. A computational investigation into the origin of the reactivity difference between these isomeric, carbonyl‐transposed auxiliaries suggests that protonation state, thus charge of the substrate‐metal complex prior to nucleopalladation is key. These investigations...

Isolation and Structural Determination of a Hexacoordinated Antimony(V) Dication

Published: 21 January 2021

Author(s): Masato Sakabe, Soichi Sato

Abstract The hexacoordinated antimony(V) dication [(ppy)3Sb]2+ ([1]2+; ppy=2‐(2‐pyridyl)phenyl), stabilized by three intramolecular donor–acceptor interactions, has been isolated as its hexachloroantimonate salt [1][SbCl6]2, prepared by the oxidative addition of chlorine to the neutral stibine [(ppy)3Sb] (1), followed by the abstraction of chloride. Air‐stable [1][SbCl6]2 exhibits remarkable thermal stability and the three ppy ligands on the antimony atom are shown to be magnetically...

From Carbohydrates to Complex Organofluorines: Synthesis, Conformation, and Lipophilicity of Multivicinal‐Fluorine‐Containing Hexitol Analogues

Published: 21 January 2021

Author(s): Danny Lainé, Olivier Lessard, Jacob St‐Gelais, Denis Giguère

Abstract There is growing interest in the preparation of fluorine‐containing organic molecules. Multivicinal‐fluorine analogues are among the most intriguing and promising compounds, but their physical and biological investigations are held back by challenging syntheses. Herein, we report on the synthesis of a large set of novel polyfluorohexitols. The dominant solution‐state conformation of all trifluorohexitols was determined, and the solid‐state conformations of some analogues were...

How Oriented External Electric Fields Modulate Reactivity

Published: 21 January 2021

Author(s): Song Yu, Pascal Vermeeren, Trevor A. Hamlin, F. Matthias Bickelhaupt

Abstract A judiciously oriented external electric field (OEEF) can catalyze a wide range of reactions and can even induce endo/exo stereoselectivity of cycloaddition reactions. The Diels–Alder reaction between cyclopentadiene and maleic anhydride is studied by using quantitative activation strain and Kohn–Sham molecular orbital theory to pinpoint the origin of these catalytic and stereoselective effects. Our quantitative model reveals that an OEEF along the reaction axis induces an enhanced...

Understanding the C−F Bond Activation Mediated by Frustrated Lewis Pairs: Crucial Role of Non‐covalent Interactions

Published: 21 January 2021

Author(s): Jorge Juan Cabrera‐Trujillo, Israel Fernández

Abstract The activation of a single C−F bond in di‐ and trifluoromethyl groups by frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) has been computationally explored by means of Density Functional Theory calculations. It is found that in this activation reaction the FLP partners exhibit a peculiar cooperative action, which is markedly different from related FLP‐mediated processes, and where non‐covalent interactions established between the Lewis base and the substrate play a decisive role. In addition, the...

Electrodeposited Trimetallic NiFeW Hydroxide Electrocatalysts for Efficient Water Oxidation

Published: 21 January 2021

Author(s): Rajmohan Rajendiran, Deviprasath Chinnadurai, Kai Chen, Aravindha Raja Selvaraj, Kandasamy Prabakar, Oi Lun Li

Abstract Tungsten‐doped Ni−Fe hydroxides fabricated on a three‐dimensional nickel foam through cathodic electrodeposition are proposed as effective oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts for alkaline water oxidation. Incorporating an adequate amount of W into Ni−Fe hydroxides modulates the electronic structure by changing the local environment of Ni and Fe and create oxygen vacancies, resulting in abundant active sites for the OER. The optimized electrocatalyst, with a substantial number of...

Selective Oxidation of 5‐Hydroxymethylfurfural to 2,5‐Diformylfuran by Visible Light‐Driven Photocatalysis over In Situ Substrate‐Sensitized Titania

Published: 21 January 2021

Author(s): Ayesha Khan, Michael Goepel, Adam Kubas, Dariusz Łomot, Wojciech Lisowski, Dmytro Lisovytskiy, Ariadna Nowicka, Juan Carlos Colmenares, Roger Gläser

Abstract Solar energy‐driven processes for biomass valorization are priority for the growing industrialized society. To address this challenge, efficient visible light‐active photocatalyst for the selective oxidation of biomass‐derived platform chemical is highly desirable. Herein, selective oxidation of 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5‐diformylfuran (DFF) was achieved by visible light‐driven photocatalysis over titania. Pristine titania is photocatalytically inactive under visible light,...

PEM Electrolysis‐Assisted Catalysis Combined with Photocatalytic Oxidation towards Complete Abatement of Nitrogen‐Containing Contaminants in Water

Published: 21 January 2021

Author(s): Jordi Ampurdanés, Sorin Bunea, Atsushi Urakawa

Abstract Electrolysis‐assisted nitrate (NO3−) reduction is a promising approach for its conversion to harmless N2 from waste, ground, and drinking water due to the possible process simplicity by in‐situ generation of H2/H/H+ by water electrolysis and to the flexibility given by tunable redox potential of electrodes. This work explores the use of a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrochemical cell for electrolysis‐assisted nitrate reduction using SnO2‐supported metals as the active...
