Chemical Biology Toolbox to Visualize Protein Aggregation in Live Cells

Published: 15 October 2021

Author(s): Di Shen, Yulong Bai, Yu Liu

Abstract Protein misfolding and aggregation is a complex biochemical process and has been associated with numerous human degenerative diseases. Developing novel chemical and biological tools and approaches to visualize aggregated proteins in live cells is in high demand for mechanistic studies, diagnostics, and therapeutics. In this review, we summarize the recent developments in the chemical biology toolbox applied to protein aggregation studies in live cells. These methods exploited...

Lanthanide‐Based Metal‐Organic‐Frameworks for Proton Conduction and Magnetic Properties

Published: 15 October 2021

Author(s): Soumava Biswas, Petr Neugebauer

Abstract The coexistence of proton conductivity and magnetic properties in metal organic frameworks (MOFs) is simply an attractive prospect to design and create multifunctional molecular materials. However, the simultaneity of interesting magnetic properties (eg. magnetocaloric effect, slow magnetic relaxation or magnetic ordering) and proton conduction in a MOF is very implausible to be observed, as chemical and structural necessities are absolutely poles apart for either of the properties....

Structure and Reactivity of NO/NO+/NO− Pincer and Porphyrin Complexes

Published: 15 October 2021

Author(s): Cecilia Mariel Gallego, Agostina Mazzeo, Carina Gaviglio, Juan Pellegrino, Fabio Doctorovich

Abstract This review covers recent progress in the field of nitrosyl pincer and porphyrinate complexes, and how their reactivity depends on the redox state of the NO ligand. Synthetic methods, and the most significant structural information, spectroelectrochemical studies, and different reactivities of nitrosyl pincer complexes are presented. These include selective activation and functionalization of carbon‐halogen bonds, catalysis for a variety of specific organic reactions, mediation of NO...

Water‐Assisted Chemical Route Towards the Oxygen Evolution Reaction at the Hydrated (110) Ruthenium Oxide Surface: Heterogeneous Catalysis via DFT‐MD and Metadynamics Simulations

Published: 15 October 2021

Author(s): Fabrizio Creazzo, Sandra Luber

Abstract Notwithstanding that RuO2 is a promising catalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), a plethora of fundamental details on its catalytic properties are still elusive, severely limiting its large‐scale deployment. It is also established experimentally that corrosion and wettability of metal oxides can, in fact, enhance the catalytic activity for OER owing to the formation of a hydrated surface layer. However, the mechanistic interplay between surface wettability, interfacial water...

Radical Scavenging Potential of the Phenothiazine Scaffold: A Computational Analysis

Published: 15 October 2021

Author(s): Marco Dalla Tiezza, Trevor A. Hamlin, F. Matthias Bickelhaupt, Laura Orian

Abstract The reactivity of phenothiazine (PS), phenoselenazine (PSE), and phenotellurazine (PTE) with different reactive oxygen species (ROS) has been studied using density functional theory (DFT) in combination with the QM‐ORSA (Quantum Mechanics‐based Test for Overall Free Radical Scavenging Activity) protocol for an accurate kinetic rate calculation. Four radical scavenging mechanisms have been screened, namely hydrogen atom transfer (HAT), radical adduct formation (RAF), single electron...

The E2 state of FeMoco: Hydride Formation versus Fe Reduction and a Mechanism for H2 Evolution

Published: 15 October 2021

Author(s): Albert Th. Thorhallsson, Ragnar Bjornsson

Abstract The iron‐molybdenum cofactor (FeMoco) is responsible for dinitrogen reduction in Mo nitrogenase. Unlike the resting state, E0, reduced states of FeMoco are much less well characterized. The E2 state has been proposed to contain a hydride but direct spectroscopic evidence is still lacking. The E2 state can, however, relax back the E0 state via a H2 side‐reaction, implying a hydride intermediate prior to H2 formation. This E2→E0 pathway is one of the primary mechanisms for H2 formation...

The Photophysics and Photochemistry of Melanin‐ Like Nanomaterials Depend on Morphology and Structure

Published: 15 October 2021

Author(s): Alexandra Mavridi‐Printezi, Arianna Menichetti, Moreno Guernelli, Marco Montalti

Abstract Melanin‐like nanomaterials have found application in a large variety of high economic and social impact fields as medicine, energy conversion and storage, photothermal catalysis and environmental remediation. These materials have been used mostly for their optical and electronic properties, but also for their high biocompatibility and simplicity and versatility of preparation. Beside this, their chemistry is complex and it yields structures with different molecular weight and...
