Synthesis of Symmetrical and Nonsymmetrical Polyenes by Iterative and Bidirectional Palladium‐Catalyzed Cross‐Coupling Reactions

Published: 17 September 2020

Author(s): Aurea Rivas, Andrea Areal, Paula Mora, Rosana Álvarez, Angel R. Lera

Abstract Bifunctional unsaturated reagents designed to undergo palladium‐catalyzed cross‐coupling reactions with complementary polyenyl connective fragments are highly useful for the undoubtedly challenging synthesis of polyenes. The current toolkit of building blocks for the bidirectional formation of Csp2−Csp2 single bonds of polyenes includes homo‐bisfunctionalized reagents with equal or unequal reactivity (due to steric and/or electronic factors), and hetero‐bisfunctionalized counterparts...

Synthesis and Characterization of Tetrakis(pentafluoroethyl)aluminate

Published: 17 September 2020

Author(s): Natalia Tiessen, Beate Neumann, Hans‐Georg Stammler, Berthold Hoge

Abstract While perfluorinated aryl, aryloxy and alkoxy aluminum species are well‐established as weakly coordinating anions (WCAs), corresponding perfluoroalkyl aluminum derivatives are virtually unknown. Reaction of Si(C2F5)3CH3 with Li[AlH4] afforded the tetrakis(pentafluoroethyl)aluminate, [Al(C2F5)4]−. Several salts of the [Al(C2F5)4]− ion were synthesized and characterized by NMR spectroscopic methods, mass spectrometry, X‐ray diffraction studies and elemental analysis.

Nanostructures for Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction

Published: 17 September 2020

Author(s): Ting Ouyang, Sheng Huang, Xiao‐Tong Wang, Zhao‐Qing Liu

Abstract One of the most effective ways to cope with the problems of global warming and the energy shortage crisis is to develop renewable and clean energy sources. To achieve a carbon‐neutral energy cycle, advanced carbon sequestration technologies are urgently needed, but because CO2 is a thermodynamically stable molecule with the highest carbon valence state of +4, this process faces many challenges. In recent years, electrochemical CO2 reduction has become a promising approach to fix and...

Electronic Oxide–Metal Strong Interaction (EOMSI)

Published: 17 September 2020

Author(s): Kun Qian, Huimei Duan, Yangyang Li, Weixin Huang

Abstract Strong metal–support interaction of supported metal catalysts is an important concept to describe the effect of metal–support interactions on the structures and catalytic performances of supported metal particles. By using an example of CeOx adlayers supported on Ag nanocrystals, herein a concept of electronic oxide–metal strong interaction (EOMSI) is put forward; this interaction significantly affects the electronic structures of oxide adlayers through metal‐to‐oxide charge transfer....

Highly Efficient Transfer Hydrogenation Catalysis with Tailored Pyridylidene Amide Pincer Ruthenium Complexes

Published: 17 September 2020

Author(s): Philipp Melle, Jan Thiede, Daniela A. Hey, Martin Albrecht

Abstract The rational optimization of homogeneous catalysts requires ligand platforms that are easily tailored to improve catalytic performance. Here, it is demonstrated that pyridylidene amides (PYAs) provide such a platform to custom‐shape transfer hydrogenation catalysts with exceptional activity. Specifically, a series of meta‐PYA pincer ligands with differently substituted PYA units has been synthezised and coordinated to ruthenium(II) centres to form bench‐stable tris‐acetonitrile...

Prebiotic Nucleoside Synthesis: The Selectivity of Simplicity

Published: 17 September 2020

Author(s): Florian M. Kruse, Jennifer S. Teichert, Oliver Trapp

Abstract Ever since the discovery of nucleic acids 150 years ago, major achievements have been made in understanding and decrypting the fascinating scientific questions of the genetic code. However, the most fundamental question about the origin and the evolution of the genetic code remains a mystery. How did nature manage to build up such intriguingly complex molecules able to encode structure and function from simple building blocks? What conditions were required? How could the precursors...

Homochiral Covalent Organic Frameworks for Asymmetric Catalysis

Published: 17 September 2020

Author(s): Hui‐Chao Ma, Jie Zou, Xue‐Tian Li, Gong‐Jun Chen, Yu‐Bin Dong

Abstract Owing to their permanent porosity, highly ordered and extended structure, good chemical stability, and tunability, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have emerged as a new type of organic materials that can offer various applications in different fields. Benefiting from the huge database of organic reactions, the required functionality of COFs can be readily achieved by modification of the corresponding organic functional groups on either polymerizable monomers or established COF...

Photo‐switchable Fluorescence in Hydrogen‐Bonded Liquid Crystals

Published: 17 September 2020

Author(s): Alexander Kappelt, Michael Giese

Abstract A series of hydrogen‐bonded liquid crystals showing switchable fluorescence is reported. The fluorescence behavior results from the unique combination of hydrogen bonding, liquid crystallinity, and photobasicity. Thus, the molecular mobility in the mesophase is essential for the reversible photo‐initiated proton transfer switching on the fluorescence of the assemblies. The application potential of the materials for photo‐patterning was demonstrated.

Tuning the Adsorption Selectivity of ZIF‐8 by Amorphization

Published: 17 September 2020

Author(s): Qiang Ma, Hua Jin, Yanshuo Li

Abstract Amorphous metal–organic frameworks (amMOFs) with a partially collapsed structure are a new category of porous hybrid materials. Here, solid‐state amorphization of ZIF‐8 was achieved by mechanical compression at 0.75 GPa. The compression‐induced amorphous ZIF‐8 (amZIF‐8) had a collapsed structure, but retained partial porosity. Benefiting from the deformed channel, the resultant amZIF‐8 exhibited preferable adsorption of C3H6, resulting in higher thermodynamic adsorption selectivity of...

Diversely Functionalised Cytochalasins through Mutasynthesis and Semi‐Synthesis

Published: 17 September 2020

Author(s): Chongqing Wang, Christopher Lambert, Maurice Hauser, Adrian Deuschmann, Carsten Zeilinger, Klemens Rottner, Theresia E. B. Stradal, Marc Stadler, Elizabeth J. Skellam, Russell J. Cox

Abstract Mutasynthesis of pyrichalasin H from Magnaporthe grisea NI980 yielded a series of unprecedented 4′‐substituted cytochalasin analogues in titres as high as the wild‐type system (≈60 mg L−1). Halogenated, O‐alkyl, O‐allyl and O‐propargyl examples were formed, as well as a 4′‐azido analogue. 4′‐O‐Propargyl and 4′‐azido analogues reacted smoothly in Huisgen cycloaddition reactions, whereas p‐Br and p‐I compounds reacted in Pd‐catalysed cross‐coupling reactions. A series of examples of...
