A Phenyl‐Ethynyl‐Macrocycle: A Model Compound for “Geländer” Oligomers Comprising Reactive Conjugated Banisters

Published: 21 June 2018

Author(s): Linda Maria Bannwart, Lukas Jundt, Thomas Müntener, Markus Neuburger, Daniel Häussinger, Marcel Mayor

Macrocycle 1 is assembled as smallest member of a series of “Geländer” oligomers with a conjugated banister comprising exclusively sp2‐ and sp‐hybridized carbon atoms. The synthesis of 1 is based on an acetylene scaffolding approach, comprising Sonogashira cross‐coupling reactions in combination with protection group strategies and a final cyclization based on an oxidative acetylene coupling using Eglinton‐Breslow reaction conditions. Macrocycle 1...

Unprecedented Stereocontrol in the Synthesis of 1,2,3‐Trisubstituted Tetrahydro‐β‐carbolines through an Asymmetric Pictet–Spengler Reaction towards Sarpagine‐Type Indole Alkaloids

Published: 21 June 2018

Author(s): M. Toufiqur Rahman, James M. Cook

The asymmetric Pictet–Spengler (P‐S) reaction of chiral Nb‐ethynyl‐substituted tryptophan methyl ester derivatives (from both d‐ and l‐tryptophan) with a simple aliphatic aldehyde, exhibited unprecedented selectivity towards either of the diastereomeric products. A simple variation of conditions could alter the outcome of the cyclization from either 100 % trans‐selective to 100 % cis‐selective originating entirely from internal asymmetric induction under mild...

Why Cyclopropanation is not Involved in Photoinduced α‐Alkylation of Ketones with Diazo Compounds

Published: 21 June 2018

Author(s): Katarzyna Rybicka‐Jasińska, Katarzyna Orłowska, Maksymilian Karczewski, Katarzyna Zawada, Dorota Gryko

Diazo compounds are widely used reagents in organic synthesis. Direct photolysis leads to singlet carbenes whereas, in the presence of a photosensitizer, carbenes in the triplet state are generated. However, their reactivity under light irradiation remains poorly understood. Herein, we report photocatalytic, direct alkylation of enamines, generated from ketones, with diazo esters in the presence of free‐base porphyrins acting as...

Air‐Stable CpCo I –Phosphite–Fumarate Precatalyst in Cyclization Reactions: Comparing Different Methods of Energy Supply

Published: 21 June 2018

Author(s): Fabian Fischer, Marko Hapke

The robust CoI precatalyst [CpCo(P{OEt}3)(trans‐MeO2CHC=CHCO2Me)] was investigated in cyclotrimerizations, furnishing benzenes and pyridines from triynes, diynes and nitriles, comparing the influence of different ways of energy supply; namely, irradiation and conventional (thermal) or microwave heating. The precatalyst was found to work under all conditions, including the possibility to catalyze cyclotrimerizations at room temperature ...

Tuning the Structure of Phosphahelicenes for Targeted Applications in Enantioselective Phosphine Organocatalysis

Published: 21 June 2018

Author(s): Paul Aillard, Maxime Gicquel, Keihann Yavari, Pascal Retailleau, Arnaud Voituriez, Angela Marinetti

The use of phosphahelicenes as nucleophilic organocatalysts for [3+2] cyclization reactions between allenoates and 2‐benzylidenemalononitriles has been extended by the systematic screening of phosphines with different helical scaffolds and substitution patterns. Among others, a new series of phosphahelicenes have been prepared by bromination/Suzuki coupling reactions of a pre‐formed phosphahelicene. This late bromination approach...

Chemistry of the Highly Strained Alkene Perfluorobicyclo[2.2.0]hex‐1(4)‐ene

Published: 21 June 2018

Author(s): Christopher P. Junk, Yigang He, Yin Zhang, Joshua R. Smith, David A. Dixon, Monica Vasiliu, David M. Lemal

Several varieties of cycloaddition as well as nucleophilic and free radical addition to the highly reactive central bond of the title fluorocarbon (1) are described. [2 + 2] Cycloaddition to 1 has made available four of the five known representatives of the [2.2.2]propellane ring system, which are rare because of their extreme strain (in the absence of fluorine substitution) and high reactivity. Two of these, a propellanone and a propellene, ...

The 1‐aryl‐2,1,3‐diazaboroles ArB(NCH2PPh2)2C6H4 (Ar = C6H5 1a, 4‐MeC6H4 1b, 4‐FC6H4 1c) result from the reactions of ArBCl2 with 1,2‐(NHCH2PPh2)2C6H4 in the presence of triethylamine. The reactions of these new proligands in addition to the parent diazaborole HB(NCH2PPh2)2C6H4 (4) with a range of metal precursors [Ru2(µ‐Cl)2Cl2(η6‐1,3,5‐Me3C6H3)2], [M2(µ‐Cl)2Cl2(η5‐C5Me5)2], [M2(µ‐Cl)2(η4‐C8H12)2] (M = Rh, Ir) and [AuCl(SC4H8)] have been explored. Engineering Zn 0.33 Co 0.67 S Hollow Microspheres with Enhanced Electrochemical Performance for Lithium and Sodium Ion Batteries

Published: 21 June 2018

Author(s): Jingfa Li, Ben Liu, Min Li, Qihao Zhou, Qiang Chen, Cong Guo, Lei Zhang

Hollow structures of transition metal sulfides, could be promising for energy devices such as hybrid supercapacitors, lithium ion batteries (LIBs) and sodium ion batteries (SIBs). Specially, mixed transition metal sulfides, benefiting from synergetic effects of the multiple metal species, have shown significant advance in the electrochemical performances of LIBs. Whereas, there is no report on exploring them as the electrode materials for...

Fabrication of a Flowerlike Ag Microsphere Film with Applications in Catalysis and as a SERS Substrate

Published: 21 June 2018

Author(s): Qijun Dai, Lu Li, Chungang Wang, Changli Lv, Zhongmin Su, Fang Chai

Three‐dimensional flowerlike Ag microstructures were assembled in situ on a substrate to fabricate Ag microflower (Ag MF) films. The morphology and size of the Ag MFs can be easily controlled by varying the reaction time. The mechanism of growth of Ag MFs was investigated by SEM. The shape evolution revealed that the Ag MFs are assembled from thin nanosheets composed of Ag nanoparticles (NPs), and the elemental composition of the NPs was...

Effect of Single‐walled Carbon Nanotube (SWCNT) Composition on Polyfluorene‐Based SWCNT Dispersion Selectivity

Published: 21 June 2018

Author(s): Shuai Liang, Han Li, Benjamin S. Flavel, Alex Adronov

Abstract Applications of single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are hampered by the mixtures of metallic and semiconducting SWCNTs that are present in commercial samples. Separation of SWCNTs according to electronic type is therefore extremely important. Recently, the selective interaction between the conjugated polymer, poly(9,9‐di‐n‐dodecyl‐fluorenyl‐2,7‐diyl) and semiconducting SWCNTs has been reported. However, the mechanism...
